The Shortest Day
9 hours, 41 minutes, and 9 seconds. If you live in Hendersonville, TN this is how much daylight you will actually get today. In perspective, on June 20th, 2020, the longest day of the year, you will have 14 hours, 38 minutes, and 15 seconds, that’s 4 hours, 57 minutes, 06 seconds difference.
Devotionals on the longest night typically focus on Blue Christmas, centered around the hope and healing of those who for this season rather than joy, they may feel conflicting feelings due to events in their lives. But, let us shift the focus away from the darkness and on to the light, how do we maximize the use of our time in the light.
Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.
Ephesians 5:15-17
We are called to live our lives by making the most out of every opportunity, and to not be foolish with what we have been given. Up until the end of 1929, most homes in the United States did not have electricity, meaning that the daytime an extremely valuable asset. Maximizing your day was pivotal on days like today.
Reflection
So how will you maximize your daylight? Will you spend your time watching another episode of your favorite tv show? or will you seek out how you can help those in need this time of year? Will you spend some intentional time with your loved ones, just focused on enjoying the time spent together? Take a moment today and rediscover how you can maximize your daylight.
Prayer
Lord, please guide me in maximizing my daylight today and everyday. Shine through me to know your will here on earth so I can make the most of every opportunity. Help guide me to provide the love and support that others may need in this holiday season and watch over those who are traveling for the holidays. In Jesus Christ’s name I pray, Amen.
