Matthew 7:3-4 BSB

Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but fail to notice the beam in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ while there is still a beam in your own eye?

Romans 3:23 tells us that we all sin, James 2:10 tells us “For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.” So, all sin is just sin, nothing more or less. Jesus said that only those with no sin could throw the first stone (John 8:7). My sins are no better or worse than anyone else’s; sin is sin and we all do it. That being said, how can we condemn someone’s sin if we are sinners as well? We can’t say “their sin is worse than mine” because God doesn’t categorize sins. We cannot say “they sin more than me” because in that judgement we are committing yet another sin. And of course, there is the “he who is without sin throw the first stone” and we know we cannot do that. The only foreseeable resolution then is that we leave the judgement to God (Matthew 7:1).  Leave the judgment of others behind, let them get their own speck out and concentrate on our own logs instead.

Prayer:

Lord in Heaven above, forgive me when I see the sins of others and not my own. Forgive the sins I have committed and help me to live a better, more righteous life each day. Help me to take my focus off of others and apply it only to you. Amen.
