Advent Devotional for JOY by Netha Larsen
Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it
an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your
endurance has a chance to grow. James 1: 2-3
I know what you’re thinking…why would I choose this particular bible verse for an
Advent devotional? Joy is a feeling that most people associate with the season
of Advent. But what about feeling joy during the hard and difficult times, during
the messy stuff of life, as James instructs us to do?
I know that for me, feeling joy amidst trials and tribulations can be a hard pill to
swallow. But we have a God who is so much bigger, so much greater, and
very capable of handling the strife of life. That doesn’t mean we can’t feel
sad, angry, lonely, or disheartened. On the contrary, it is during these difficulties that God grows us,
molds us, and shapes us on our spiritual journey with Him. He can also use our
trials to help others in similar circumstances.
We have a Father who knows our heart and loves us more than we can
imagine!
We have a Savior who thought we were worthy enough to shed His
blood and give His life for ours.
We have a great comforter, the Holy Spirit, who gives us the strength to face
whatever it is we may be going through.
So, if this joyous Holiday season doesn’t seem very joyful in whatever season
you’re going through, remember that we have a God who sees, knows, and cares. A God who sent His only son, Emmanuel-God with us, to be our
Hope, our Peace, our Love, and our JOY. Now that’s something to be “Joy-Full”
about!
Prayer: Thank you, Lord, that you are with me today and every day. I’m grateful
that even in the midst of sadness or heartache, I can experience the JOY that is
only found in you. In Jesus’ Holy name, I pray, Amen.
“There will be joy in the morning…there will be joy in the morning…If it’s not
good, then He’s not done; no, He’s not done with it yet. There will be joy in the
morning!” Lyrics from the song by Tauren Wells
