And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.
Luke 2:8-11
Hallelujah! Today is the day Christ our Lord was born! There is nothing more exciting than to be able to give thanks and praise God for the wonderful gift he gave to us on this day. We love the Christmas story, but we can overlook some of the more subtle messages that God sent us along with Jesus at times.
Take a second look at the passage from Luke above, see something you haven’t before? Think about how out of all the people that God could have chose to send the Angel to tell first. From kings and queens to the pharisees or high priests, that he chose the shepherds.
How fitting is the angels announcing the arrival of the shepherd of humanity, the sacrificial lamb to God, to the shepherds first on Christmas day. The shepherds were also common men, sent off to spread the good news of Christ’s birth, just like we are tasked to do in The Great Commission.
Hallelujah! Thank you God for your wonderful gift that you have given to us on Christmas day! I know that Your gift to us is the true reason for this season. Help me be more like the shepherds that You called to spread the news of the coming of Your Son throughout today, and everyday moving forward. In the name of Christ my Lord I pray, Amen.
