Conversational Dinner

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
- Acts 2:42

We often have an image of Jesus breaking bread in the manner of the last supper. When Jesus pronounces, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” (1 Corinthians 11:24), we tend to overlook the rest of the dinner. Can you just imagine the conversations around the table that were happening following Jesus giving us the sacrament of Holy Communion? What we tend to gloss over is the importance of the last supper as a whole.

The symbolic nature of the last supper gives us a blueprint for gathering in fellowship with fellow Christians. By combining the intimate setting of sharing a meal, and inviting God to come bless and be present amongst us as we converse, we enter into an environment where Christian Discipleship can grow and blossom. A meal can mean many things, an act of celebration, grief, reconciliation, fellowship, family, and even worship.

Questions for Thought

  1. How has a meal played an important role in your personal life? How about your Christian Life?
  2. What is the “blueprint for success” for a Christian Fellowship meal?
  3. How can you extend your grace to others through a meal?
